Prime Video Dual Subtitles: Two Languages on Screen

Prime Video lets you choose one subtitle language at a time, and the list changes from title to title. The LinguaCap extension adds a second, translated line, so you can follow the original dialogue and still understand every scene.

At a glance

Install LinguaCap in Chrome or another Chromium browser, sign in and play a title on primevideo.com or in the Prime Video section of your Amazon store. Select subtitles in the language you are learning; LinguaCap shows a translation underneath. The Prime Video apps for phones and TVs are not supported.

How to turn on dual subtitles on Prime Video

  1. Install the LinguaCap extension and sign in.
  2. Choose the language you are learning and your native language.
  3. Open primevideo.com, or the Prime Video pages of an Amazon store such as amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de or amazon.co.jp, and start a title.
  4. Open the subtitles menu in the player and choose the language you are learning.
  5. LinguaCap adds the translated line. Use its button in the player to change the order, the size and the translation.

Why the subtitle list changes

Subtitle and audio languages on Prime Video depend on the title, the rights holder and your region. A series may have a dozen subtitle languages in one country and three in another. If the language you are learning has no subtitle track on a title, Prime Video cannot give you the original text: choose another title, or load an .srt or .vtt file you have for that episode in the extension.

If only your native language is missing, that is not a problem. Keep the original track selected and LinguaCap translates it for you.

A study routine for long films

Films are long, so split them. Watch twenty minutes with both lines, then stop for a short review: open the transcript, look through the lines you have just watched and save five useful phrases. Pick one line for Dictation or Shadowing, and continue the film another day.

This rhythm keeps the story enjoyable and still leaves you with a small set of words to review. After a few films, try a whole episode of a series with the translation hidden and check only the lines you miss.

Look for shows made in your target language

Amazon produces series in many countries, which makes Prime Video useful beyond English. Search the catalogue for shows produced in the language you are learning and check the audio menu: original audio with matching subtitles is the best combination for learning. Dubbed audio is fine for entertainment, but its subtitles often follow the original script rather than the dub.

Tools you can use while watching

  • Word card: click a word for a translation in this context, its pronunciation and a short explanation, then save it.
  • Transcript: the whole dialogue as a list you can scroll, search with your eyes and jump around in.
  • Practice: Dictation and Shadowing on any line of the transcript.
  • Playback speed: slow down without the voices changing pitch.
  • Flashcards: saved words return for review in the LinguaCap app, scheduled with FSRS-6.
