LinguaCap vs Trancy: Dual Subtitles or a Full Study Routine?

Both Trancy and our app add bilingual subtitles to video, yet their strongest uses differ. Trancy offers subtitle reading modes and translation choices. We combine interactive captions with AI translation, three practice modes, FSRS-6 review and a reading library.

At a glance

Trancy is a strong choice if you want subtitle display modes and translation engine options. Try our app if your priority is video and course practice across Shadowing, Dictation and Speaking, followed by FSRS-6 review.

LinguaCap site and subtitle support

On desktop, our extension supports video and course subtitles on YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, TED, edX, Coursera, Udemy, Crunchyroll, Domestika, DW Learn German and TV5MONDE Apprendre. Spotify is supported for translating song lyrics. Our extension also works on 1,000+ other compatible sites with VTT/SRT subtitle tracks. When it detects a video player, you can upload your own .srt or .vtt file to the current tab. On iOS and Android, our app works with YouTube and 1,000+ compatible websites that provide built-in VTT/SRT subtitles. For Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and Crunchyroll, use the desktop extension: their native mobile apps do not support browser extensions.

The platform question

Both products cover more than a single streaming site. Trancy explicitly documents YouTube, Netflix, Udemy and Coursera in its subtitle guide; we cover TED, Udemy and 1,000+ compatible sites with VTT or SRT tracks, plus desktop uploads of your own .srt/.vtt subtitles and Spotify lyric translation. Site support can vary with player changes and the captions a video actually provides. Before paying for either tool, open the exact course or show you want to study and test its subtitles.

What happens when you stop the video

Trancy offers a mode for reading video text and lets you choose a translation engine. Both services offer shadowing and speaking exercises. We also include dictation, FSRS-6 card review and a separate Read library for books and articles. Compare the same phrase in each practice mode, then decide which feedback helps you improve.

A practical three-day comparison

Day one: watch a short YouTube video with both subtitle lines. Day two: revisit five phrases without reading the translation immediately. Day three: test recall. In both services, try speaking or shadowing; in our app, also do a dictation and review the saved words with FSRS-6. Count the phrases you can understand on day three, rather than comparing the number of menu options.

Mobile and pricing caveats

Both companies offer mobile apps. We support YouTube and compatible websites with built-in VTT/SRT captions on a phone; Trancy documents YouTube-based mobile study. Browser extensions do not operate inside the Netflix, Prime Video or HBO Max phone apps. Plans, quotas and supported AI engines may change, so confirm current terms on each official pricing page.

Both tools practise speaking

Trancy describes shadowing and speaking exercises, so it would be misleading to give it the speaking category by default. We offer Shadowing, Dictation and Speaking as separate modes. Phrase repeat and auto-pause let you control the pace; AI-assisted word and subtitle translation helps you understand the line before practising it. Use a short course clip to test which recording, listening and feedback flow you will actually repeat.

Reading mode or a book library?

Trancy reading mode brings video text forward. Our Read section serves a different reading session: choose a book or article from a CEFR-level catalog, or import your own PDF or EPUB. Select words or phrases for contextual translation and AI explanation, then review saved vocabulary with FSRS-6 flashcards. If you want to study the transcript of one video, compare the reading modes; if you want a graded text or your own book, test that workflow separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does Trancy support Coursera?

Its official bilingual subtitle manual lists Coursera and Udemy alongside YouTube and Netflix. Test your specific course player before relying on it.

Which is better for speaking practice?

Both offer shadowing and speaking practice. We also have dictation, auto-pause, phrase repeat and FSRS-6 review; test the feedback on the same recording.

Can I watch Netflix with dual subtitles in the mobile app?

Mobile apps focus on their own supported players, particularly YouTube. Netflix mobile app playback does not host browser extensions; use a desktop browser for extension features.
