At a glance
Pick Lingopie when you want a curated catalog and lessons tied to its shows. Pick our app when you want your own supported videos, three practice modes and a CEFR reading catalog alongside FSRS-6 review.
LinguaCap site and subtitle support
On desktop, our extension supports video and course subtitles on YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, TED, edX, Coursera, Udemy, Crunchyroll, Domestika, DW Learn German and TV5MONDE Apprendre. Spotify is supported for translating song lyrics. Our extension also works on 1,000+ other compatible sites with VTT/SRT subtitle tracks. When it detects a video player, you can upload your own .srt or .vtt file to the current tab. On iOS and Android, our app works with YouTube and 1,000+ compatible websites that provide built-in VTT/SRT subtitles. For Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and Crunchyroll, use the desktop extension: their native mobile apps do not support browser extensions.

The real choice is your content source
A built-in library saves time when you do not know what to watch. Lingopie packages shows with clickable subtitles, quizzes and other activities. We support videos you have already selected: YouTube, a Netflix title on desktop, a TED talk, a course video or one of 1,000+ compatible VTT/SRT sites. The desktop extension can load your own .srt/.vtt file and translate Spotify song lyrics. Lingopie also has a Chrome extension, so it is no longer accurate to describe it as library-only. The question is which content you will actually return to.
What each product teaches well
Lingopie’s catalog makes it easy to spend time with the language; its player includes dual subtitles and tools for pronunciation and grammar. We support a routine across video and reading: translate in context, practise with Shadowing, Dictation or Speaking, then review saved words with FSRS-6. A learner who wants ready-made entertainment may value the first. Someone following a specific professional topic or course may value the second.
A comparison without a misleading price claim
Lingopie publishes subscription plans and a trial; terms can vary by device and location. We have a free starting tier and Pro features. Instead of dividing a subscription price by a hypothetical number of lessons, compare one week of actual use: how many minutes did you watch, how many phrases did you revisit, and did you need to pay for content you already had elsewhere?
Mobile and streaming limits
Lingopie has its own mobile viewing apps for its catalog. Our mobile apps support YouTube and compatible websites with built-in VTT/SRT subtitles. A browser extension cannot attach itself to Netflix’s native phone app, so evaluate mobile viewing in the actual app you plan to use.
What happens after you watch
Lingopie pairs its show catalog with lessons and exercises. We let you turn a supported video into practice: use AI-assisted word and subtitle translation, repeat a phrase with auto-pause, then choose Shadowing, Dictation or Speaking. The last mode records your voice for a spoken-word comparison. Saved vocabulary goes into FSRS-6 flashcards for scheduled review. Try a scene from each service and count how many phrases you can still use the next day.
Two different kinds of catalog
Lingopie curates shows and films. We also have curated learning material, but its Read catalog contains books and articles organized by CEFR level from A1 to C2. You can bring your own PDF or EPUB, select a word or phrase and request contextual translation and AI explanation. If your goal is regular reading as well as viewing, compare the reading library and your own imported book alongside the entertainment catalogs.
