At a glance
Install the LinguaCap extension in Chrome or another Chromium browser, sign in, open disneyplus.com on your computer and play a title. In the Disney+ menu, pick subtitles in the language you are learning; LinguaCap adds a translated line below. It does not work in the Disney+ apps for phones, tablets and TVs.
How to turn on dual subtitles on Disney+
- Add LinguaCap to Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Yandex Browser and sign in.
- Set the language you are learning and your native language in the extension.
- Open disneyplus.com, choose a film or an episode and start playback.
- In the Disney+ audio and subtitles menu, choose subtitles in the language you are learning.
- LinguaCap adds a translation under each line. If Disney+ has no subtitles in your language, LinguaCap translates the original track.
Learn from films you already know
Animated films you watched as a child are some of the best material for learning. You know the story, so your attention goes to the language. Songs repeat, the dialogue is clear and many lines are short. A Disney or Pixar film in the language you are learning, where your region offers that audio track, is a gentle first step before series made for adults.
Many Disney+ titles have dubbed audio in several languages. A dub is a translation, and the subtitles in the same language may follow the original script rather than the dubbed words. If the text and the voices do not match, choose a different subtitle track or a title originally produced in your target language. For listening practice, matching audio and text matter more than the choice of film.
Make one scene your lesson
- Choose a scene of two or three minutes: a conversation or a song.
- Watch it with both lines, then again with the translation hidden.
- Open the transcript and click the words you still do not recognize; save the ones you would use.
- Practise one or two lines with Dictation, or repeat them aloud with Shadowing.
- Review the saved words later as flashcards in the LinguaCap app.
Settings worth changing
- Translation on top, if you are a beginner and need the meaning first.
- A smaller translation line, so your eyes stay on the original.
- Slower playback with natural pitch for fast scenes and songs.
- Smart (AI) translation for jokes, songs and wordplay, where a word-for-word translation misses the point. Unlimited AI translation is part of Pro.
Disney+ on phones and TVs
The Disney+ apps for iPhone, Android and TVs cannot load browser extensions, so dual subtitles are available only on a computer. Use the TV for relaxed viewing with subtitles in your target language and the computer for short study sessions. On your phone, keep practising with YouTube in the LinguaCap app.
Frequently asked questions
Does Disney+ support dual subtitles?
Not by itself. Disney+ shows one subtitle track at a time. The LinguaCap extension for Chrome adds a translated second line on disneyplus.com.
Which browsers work?
Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers: Edge, Brave, Opera and Yandex Browser. Safari and Firefox are not supported.
Can I learn with Disney+ on my phone?
Not with dual subtitles, because the Disney+ app does not run extensions. You can still watch with target-language subtitles in the app and study on a computer.
Why do the subtitles not match what the characters say?
You are probably watching dubbed audio. Subtitles for a dub are often translated from the original script. Choose the original audio with its own subtitles, or try a different subtitle track.
