Language Learning App for iPhone and iPad: LinguaCap with YouTube

A language learning app on iPhone should make the video you already watch useful for practice. Open a captioned YouTube lesson, understand a difficult line, say it yourself and return to its vocabulary later—all in LinguaCap.

At a glance

Our iPhone and iPad app works with YouTube and compatible sites that provide built-in VTT/SRT captions. It adds dual subtitles, contextual AI translation, repeat and auto-pause, Shadowing, Dictation and Speaking practice, and saved-word review. Netflix and other native streaming apps do not host our browser extension; use our desktop extension for those sites.

Start with a captioned YouTube video on iPhone

Install LinguaCap from the App Store and open a YouTube video in the app. Pick a video whose subtitles match the spoken language. Read the original line first; keep the translation available as a check. Tap a word or phrase for a contextual translation and AI explanation without leaving the lesson.

The built-in browser also works on compatible websites that supply standard VTT or SRT captions. Availability depends on each page and player. Our support for 1,000+ compatible sites describes the range of captioned players, not a guarantee that every video has a usable track.

A ten-minute iOS practice routine

Spend three minutes watching. Replay one difficult line with auto-pause. Use Shadowing to copy the speaker’s timing; switch to Dictation to type the same line from audio. In Speaking, record your voice and inspect the spoken words. The change of task makes it easier to notice whether your difficulty is listening, pronunciation or remembering the phrase.

Save a few words that you would use again. Review them in FSRS-6 flashcards rather than collecting every new word from the transcript. If you keep a separate Anki deck, Pro export is available from the phone or your web account.

  • Choose a short video with captions.
  • Translate only the lines you miss.
  • Repeat one line aloud and complete a short dictation.
  • Review saved words the next day.

How this differs from other app searches

People searching for a Language Reactor iOS app, a Trancy alternative, Migaku on iPhone or Lingopie often have different goals. Language Reactor, Trancy and Migaku are familiar names for studying media; Lingopie is known for a curated viewing experience. Our iOS app is for a direct routine with your own YouTube video and compatible captioned websites: watch, understand, practise and review. Check each product’s current mobile features for your particular workflow.

If you also study on a computer, our extension covers Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, TED, Coursera, Udemy and other supported sites. On iPhone and iPad, stay with YouTube or compatible pages with embedded VTT/SRT captions. An imported subtitle file for an arbitrary video is a desktop extension feature, not the mobile workflow described here.

Add reading when you want a quieter lesson

Our Read section offers books and articles grouped by CEFR level. You can also bring a PDF or EPUB and select text for contextual translation and AI explanation. A short article on the same topic as your video gives important words a second appearance away from fast audio.

For a manageable habit, alternate a short video day with a reading day. Keep the same topic for both, and revisit saved vocabulary after each session. The point is steady recall, not the number of videos completed.
